Polk City is a four-season recreational playground in Iowa’s “Lake Country,” bordered by picturesque Saylorville Lake and Big Creek State Park. The 5400-acre Saylorville Lake has a full service marina and a five-lane boat ramp to allow for easy access to many areas on the reservoir, and it is stocked with a variety of species such as Crappie, White Bass, Walleye, Bluegill and Northern Pike. Saylorville Lake also has two beautiful swimming beaches, campsites, hiking and biking trails and several nature centers and visitors’ center near the dam. Approximately two miles north of Polk City is Big Creek Lake and State Park, which has become a major recreational area in central Iowa. Big Creek’s swimming beach is very popular, and the lake also has fishing, five boat ramps and is surrounded by picnic tables and shelters. Jester Park in Polk City offers 9 and 18 hole golf courses, horseback riding and camping, and hikers, joggers and bicyclists enjoy the Neal Smith Trail, that begins in downtown Des Moines and winds its way through Polk City on to Big Creek State Park.
